There were 195 of these giant 4-8-8-2's cab forward locomotives that ran on the Southern Pacific railway. With 124,300 pounds of tractive effort and a top speed of 75 miles per hour, the AC-12 proved its worth hauling both freight and passenger consists. On level ground, they could single-handedly pull 100 cars. Despite such service, the diesel age loomed on the horizon in the 1950s, signaling the end of Espee steam power. The AC-12's were retired after barely a decade of service.

Cab forward #4294 proved not only the last AC-12, but the last new steam locomotive ever  purchased by the Southern Pacific. This locomotive is on display at the California State Railroad Museum and is also designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.

This scale-sized Lionel model marks the first time that this historic locomotive has ever been portrayed in die-cast metal O gauge. Accurate detailing includes many separately applied metal parts from sand lines to prototypical builder's plates. The RailSounds 5.0  sound system brings the AC-12 to life with effects that include the unique air horn.

This LIONEL 38071 SOUTHERN PACIFIC AC-12 CAB FORWARD LOCOMOTIVE has the following features: TrainMaster Command Control equipped—able to run in Command Control Mode or in Conventional Transformer Control Mode, Odyssey System for speed control with ON/OFF switch, RailSounds 5.0 sound system with custom recorded effects including: Multi-part CrewTalk dialog and TowerCom announcements to create realistic operating scenarios from pulling out of the yard to initiating an emergency stop, Realistic operator-controlled effects, including the water injector and air horn, activated by the CAB-1 Remote Controller (not included), DynaChuff synchronized chuffing that shifts through 15 levels of intensity as the locomotive gains speed, Simulate the locomotive running light or battling against a heavy load by manually adjusting the DynaChuff intensity level with CAB-1 commands, MultiWhistle effect simulates blows at different steam pressures, long and short attacks, and extra quilling with each press of the whistle button, Independently adjustable volume control—use your CAB-1 Remote Controller to lower the level of background effects such as chuffing while keeping operator-controlled effects such as the whistle at full volume, Many operator-controlled effects including CrewTalk dialog and TowerCom announcements are accessible using only a conventional transformer (not included), Dual FatBoy speakers, High-torque Pittman motor with momentum flywheel, Wireless Tether connection between locomotive and tender, Directional lighting including operating headlight and back-up light, Illuminated classification, marker lights and number boards, Die-cast metal locomotive body, frame and trucks, Scale front coupler with interchangeable O gauge coupler for double-heading, ElectroCoupler on rear of tender, Traction tires, Synchronized fan-driven smoke unit, Separately applied metal details, Accurate separately applied builder's plates, Opening cab roof hatches, Opening cab doors, Illuminated cab interior, Cab window glass, Engineer and fireman figures, Die-cast metal tender body and trucks, and Individually opening tender water hatches reveal easy-to-access RailSounds controls.
